The Rutan Voyager Model 76 Voyager is a historic airplane because it was the first craft to fly around the world without stopping or refueling. As you might imagine, the craft is unique and specially designed for maximum fuel efficiency. The Voyager is made entirely out of light weight composite materials to keep weight to a minimum. As part of its design, the craft has seventeen (17) separate fuel tanks that allow it to carry a little over 7,000 pounds. Through the use of composites, the Voyager weighs approximately 940 pounds, when empty.
The round-the-world, record-breaking flight began from Edwards Airforce Base and spanned nine (9) days in December 1986. The pilots were Dick Rutan, the Voyager designer, and Jeana Yeager. (no relation to Chuck Yeager).
