The Piper Super Cruiser checks are great personal checks. What makes this aircraft worthy of being featured on a personal check? How about the fact that in 1947 the Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser became the first light personal aircraft to circle the globe. At that time, the plane sold for just under $3,000. The worldwide flight also created a reputation for durability. The only significant mechanical failure during the 1947 flight around the world was a cracked tail wheel.
The Piper PA-12 “Super Cruiser” was not the first in its lineage. The Super Cruiser is, in fact, an upgraded Piper J-5 aircraft. This change occurred when Piper stopped using the the J- designation for its aircraft and began using the PA designation. As a result, the Piper J-5C became the PA-12 “Super Cruiser”.
These aircraft are extremely popular. It is estimated that more than a thousand still fly today. At the heart of the craft was a 100 hp Lycoming O-235 engine. The base design had two 18 gallon fuel tanks.
